New discovery may advance dental care

Postby Amaru » Fri Jan 29, 2010 1:37 pm

Scientists have found a clue to the origin of periodontal pain and dental surgical pain which may lead to more treatments or procedures to increase dental health.

The study, conducted at the Oregon Health & Science University's School of Dentistry, discovered a connection between a peptide know as Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and the development of the trigeminal nerve, a sensory nerve that is also involved in some motor functions such as biting, chewing and swallowing.

Because of that, the trigeminal nerve communicates periodontal pain and dental surgical pain to a person's brain.

The new research has found a relationship between the trigeminal nerve communications and with the peptide NGF, which promotes the transport of the sensory messages between the nerve cells.

"This study has broad implications for trigeminal nerve regeneration," said Dr Agnieszka Balkowiec, the senior author of the study.

Periodontal pain comes from a group of diseases that affect the tissues in the mouth providing support and anchor for teeth. If a person leaves the condition untreated, it can lead conditions such as Gingivitis and trench mouth.

Those interested in avoiding periodontal diseases may want to get regular dental care from their dentist to achieve optimal dental health. dental roseville dentist roseville

I wonder where you are getting those information. Maybe, it would be better if you'll include the sources to make factual and credibility purposes. Indeed, it is short yet a great post.

I agree, it's a really interesting read, but I wish you had included the source so I and other people interested can do some follow-up reading on the matter. Dentists Glendale

There's always a need to put the sources to whatever borrowed information. You might be liable for some copyright infringement or plagiarism if it is not indicated on the said article. It is a good post, but still, we need the source itself. Thank you!

I don't understand what the trigeminal nerve has to do with advancing dental care? The nerve simply relays to the brain pain which seems like a good thing. Otherwise if one didn't feel pain, they would tend to let any problems continue and get worse. Or is this more to do with NGF and using it to regrow a trigeminal nerve that has been damaged or removed from periodontal disease?
